Dress - Women wear comfortable and luxurious ‘kirtles’ or tunics over a shirt. On formal occasions they wear very elaborate gowns, and brooches are often used to fasten the gown at the shoulder and a sash running across the waist and shawls or cloaks made from wool. Contrasting color cuffs are also highly popular. Cloaks are often embellished with gold or silver embroidery or other elaborate edgings.
They often also carry a purse suspended to a belt by a cord of silk or a metal chain. On very formal occasions women wear long ‘trains’ to their dresses. These sometimes require them to employ maids to carry the train. They also uncover their necks to sport elaborate necklaces. Men's clothes fit tightly to the body. The sleeves of their coats are slits which show fine white shirts underneath. They wear silk or velvet doublets and slightly pointed shoes. The mantle is open in front, and they often wear a cap that is turned up. Symbols of divinity granted by the church marks a person's status.
