Gems - Gemstones are minerals that are treasured for their beauty and durability. A large number of minerals can be cut into gems. Their value generally depends on four elements: the beauty of the stone, rarity, hardness or toughness, and the skill with which it has been cut and polished. Lapidary Arts - Lapidary is the art of working with small stones such as gems. There are four basic styles of gem cutting: tumbling, cabbing, faceting and carving. Plus there are a number of ways to assemble stones into mosaic like patterns, (called intarsia,) boxes, etc.
Identification of Gems - A gem cannot always be identified by sight alone. It is therefore necessary to rely on measurement of the optical properties that can be determined without harming the stone in any way.
Ground Gemstones - To attempt to grind a gemstone to powder, use your mortar and pestle and the gemstone you wish to grind and roll a check which is 5% x the plus of the gem minus your skill. If you are successful, you will have a jar of powdered gemstone ready to be used or sold. Not all gemstones can be ground successfully.
Uses - Ground gems of the type needed must be added to a magic item in order to create potions.
