Kite Making - Kites are sometimes refferd to as "paper hawks". They are a part of religious festivals introduced to Fudokan by Buddhist priests. The basic rectangle of the kite can take on many new forms: hawks, cranes, lions, dragons, wyvern, fish, turtles and even demons or angels. Some kites symbolize good luck, happiness. fertility, longevetity and prosperity and others were even used to scare away evil spirits. Some Buddhist priests believed that the flight of a kite could predict the comming future such as a successful marriage or the success or failure of this year's crop of rice. Kites were also flown to celebrate an excellent harvest.
Not only Buddhists believed inthe power of kites. Kites were also sold in some Shinto shrines as a charm to protect against sickness, fatigue, or bad luck or kites shaped like carp were flow to celebrate the birth of a firstborn son. This kite represents courage, strength, and the struggles to be overcome.
