Advocacy – Advocates are involved with the discovery, identification, and analysis of evidence as a means of defending accused citizens in civil and criminal cases. The aim of the Advocate is to defend the accused against these crimes which are sometimes prosecuted or carried out overzealously. To accomplish these aims a variety of methods are used, including reconstructing the crime, hiring investigators to collect physical and trace clues, and interrogating suspects and witnesses to get to the bottom of the story. The methods of detection employed are dictated by the nature of the crime and the procedures permitted by the legal system. Most legal defenses begin with careful, objective observations that are then assembled, collated, and matched against the evidence collected by the opposing advocate. In legal cases if there is a reasonable doubt the person is involved in a crime the court will allow a witness to be interviewed and evidence presented at the charging of the crime or case. If charges are filed in legal court further investigations are undertaken using methods and techniques to provide for the person’s defense. Technological advances have been incorporated into criminal investigation as well; for example, analyzing trace clues such as dust, paint, glass, and other previously unseen evidence is now possible using looking glasses and other magic items.

Organizations: Advocates are required to be members of professional organizations and are heavily regulated buy these bodies as well as local authorities. Advocates are well paid but often work long hours and are expected to be at the call of those who are in need nearly all the time.

Education: Legal education programs are usually undertaken at school and training usually takes four years. Following graduation legal practitioners are often required to undertake a period of public service before full registration is granted, typically one or two years.

Treatment: There are two different types of cases civil and criminal. Each of them have five degrees of difficulty and require the same roll. Full defense of a client requires three stages. Preparation, pretrial, and trial. Each requires a check when performed.

Failure: A failure can occur in any of the three stages. Failure in the preparation stage results in destruction or loss of valuable evidence. Failure in the creation phase means you make the case more difficult. (Add +1000 to the roll) Failure in the pretrial stage can allow for improper evidence to be submitted or key evidence thrown out. (Add +500 to the roll) Failure in the trial phase results in a lost case. Occasionally the court may allow for an appeals process which requires that you go through the three stages again.

Common Cases: You can prepare, go to pretrial or try a case of PL4 or under with a DC 100 check.

Uncommon Cases: A case of between PL5 and PL8 requires a successful check. (DC 200 + (PL of ailment – your PL x 200)

Severe Cases: A case of between PL9 and PL12 requires a successful check. (DC 400 + (PL of ailment – your PL x 200)

Biased Cases: A case of between PL13 and PL16 requires a successful check. (DC 600 + (PL of ailment – your PL x 200)

Persecuted Cases: A case of between PL17 and PL25 requires a successful check. (DC 800 + (PL of ailment – your PL x 200)

Specialization - Many apothecaries specialize in a particular tier of case. Choose one of the above and add +100 to any roll.

Action: Evidence collection takes about eight hours per PL of the case if you are working with a properly trained investigator pretrial usually takes from 1-10 hours and court usually takes from 1-20 hours.

Occupations – Advocates can get jobs for the government prosecuting criminals or defending the poor. They can also be the personal advocate for a group or faction or even for powerful individuals. They spend a lot of time in the office assembling evidence. They can also be hired to write a new lay or review cases for irregularities. They are fairly well paid and usually receive a bonus for after winning a big case.

The methods of detection employed are dictated by the nature of the crime and the procedures permitted by the legal system. Most investigations begin with careful, objective observations that are then assembled, collated, and matched against applicable law. If there is a reasonable doubt the person is involved in a crime the court will allow a witness to be interviewed. If there is reason to assume that a crime has indeed been committed, further investigation is undertaken using investigative methods and techniques.

The partnership between advocacy and crime detection has been strengthened by the infusion of new technological developments, although major responsibility for solving crimes continues to rest with traditional methods of inquiry
