Record Keeping - Records represent an important asset. If the suspect is wanted a bounty will be posted for them. A special branch of records called intelligence files contains biographical information on selected people including criminals. These files include criminal specialties, associates, and skills and other information that might suggest future criminal involvement and the means by which the criminals can be apprehended. Records are also used for a general analysis of crime, so that administrators can be informed of criminal trends and the best ways to suppress them. They are usually only available with special permission. Business and public records are consulted by investigators for many reasons.

Document Examination - Document examination consists largely of comparing questioned handwriting with known handwriting to determine the writer's identity; it also includes the examination of hand printing, forgeries, typewriting, inks, paper, indented and eradicated writing, rubber-stamp impressions, charred paper, and related items. No two people write exactly alike; the writing process is so complex that personal peculiarities always persist in the handwriting of any given individual. Detailed examination reveals these hidden characteristics, which can then form the basis for an expert's opinion.

Searching City Records: When it comes to major documents such as court records, business records, and tax documents and the like, only certain persons in the general public can obtain someone's information and there has to be a sound legal reason or a court order (subpoena, etc.). Otherwise in order to receive major records you have to be an immediate family member and have the person's full name and date of birth.

This information can sometimes be accessed by family members who hold a grudge against the complainant. There are usually laws that forbid a person from representing themselves as the following: A military person, a bonded troubleshooter, any government official or employee, and legal council.

Minor records such as birth, death, marriage, records of registered complaints, and other recods may be viewed by any citizen at the hall of records at the discretion of the Record keepers.
